This Canon 40D has been used both for astrophotography and terrestial photography. To enhance the sensitivity in the red spectrum it has been astro-modified by Baader.
Below is a 180s subexposure taken by this camera using a Canon 200mm lens at f/4. The only processing made is calibration (flat, dark and bias) and stretching. Click on it to open up a full resolution image.
Except for the Canon 40D, one battery, battery charger, CD and the kit lens (18.55mm), it comes with the following non-standard accessories:
-
Baader modification (see image). In a normal camera parts of the red spectrum is rejected by a filter in front of the sensor. The internal filter has been replaced with another so that the camera is more sensitive for red light. Note that this will change the white balance of the camera making terrestrial photography difficult - you have to set a custom white balance each time the light changes, or you can shoot raw images (not jpg) and then set the white balance afterwards in the PC. Another alternative is to buy a clip in filter that restores the original white balance (see below). At Baader a filter replacement for a Canon 40D costs ca 2400SEK (275EUR).
-
Astronomik OWB Typ2 clip in filter (see image). This is a filter that restores the original Canon white balance. Whit this filter in place the Canon 40D will work as normal also for terrestrial photography (auto white balance will work). Note that this filter shall not be used for astrophotography. The spectrum of this filter can be found here. It sells for 1100SEK (129EUR) at Astronomik .
-
Astronomik UHC clip in filter (see image). This filter is primarily used for visual observations and is transparent only to parts of the blue-green and the red part of the spectra. However since these "windows" correspond to the blue H-beta line, the two OIII-lines, the red H-alpha line and SII line it can work as an extreme form of light pollution filter (depending on how much light pollution there is in this two "windows". Another way of understanding it is that it is like having "two broad narrowband" filters at the same time. The H-beta line, the two OIII lines, the H-alpha line and the SII line will pass thru the filter but at the sensor only the H-alpha and the SII-line will be picked up by the red pixels - the blue and green pixels will not register these photons. Similar the H-beta and the bluer OIII line will be picked up by the blue pixels and the greener OIII line by the green pixels. Thus you can get the these emissions by separating the channels in the pre-processing. It is not exactly a "simultaneous" narrowband filter since there are also other photons inside these "windows". The spectrum of this filter can be found here. It sells for 1400SEK (159EUR) at Astronomik .
-
Astronomik H-alpha clip in filter (see image). This is a traditional narrowband filter for the H-alpha line. The transmission is 6nm wide. Note that when you use this filter you will not get any signal in the blue and green pixels on the sensor. The spectrum of this filter can be found here. It sells for 2600SEK (299EUR) at Astronomik .
-
Astronomik CLS CCD clip in filter (see image). This is a more traditional light pollution filter. In addition it retains a good white balance. The spectrum of this filter can be found here. It sells for 1400SEK (159EUR) at Astronomik .
-
Canon tripod mount ring AII (see image). Used for better balance when using longer lenses (e.g. Canon EF 200/2,8 L II USMA). At Cyberphoto it sells new for ca 1398SEK.
-
USB cable (see image). USB A to USB mini A for PC control.
-
Canon battery power adapter (see image). This is used instead of the standard battery and is connected to a 12V power supply, which is the normal power for astro gear. The "grey" metal box is for transforming the voltage from 12V to the cameras internal voltage. Thus one does not need to worry about running out of battery charge. At teleskop-express it sells new for ca SEK 650SEK (69EUR).
-
CF card 32GB (see image). A new 32GB x400 CF card sells for ca 500SEK.
-
Canon Angle Finder C (see image). Sometimes the viewing angle (when looking thru the camera viewer) may be awkward. Using this tool you can view comfortably. At cyberphoto it sells for 2399SEK.
-
Soligor Kameraväska Classic Line Maxi 2 (see image). Cyberphoto does not sell this anymore but similar bags cost ca 800SEK.
The "new"-price for the Canon 40D (with the kit lens, battery, charger, CD) was 8000 - 9000 SEK. Together with the above the "new price" would be in the range 20 000 to 22 000 SEK. A used Canon 40D sells for ca 2000 - 2500 SEK. The items above excluding the camera has a "new"-price of ca 15 000 SEK. I will sell the complete package as described above for 10000SEK.
